‘Suffs’ brings fight for voting rights to Phoenix stage

Tony Award-winning musical runs Oct. 14-Nov. 29 at The Phoenix Theatre Company

The Phoenix Theatre Company will present “Suffs” Oct. 14-Nov. 29 in the Hormel Theatre. Created by Shaina Taub, the Tony Award-winning musical tells the story of women who fought for voting rights in the early 20th century, focusing on the activists, competing strategies and internal disagreements within the suffrage movement.

The story centers on Alice Paul and her push for a more aggressive approach to securing women’s suffrage, which puts her at odds with Carrie Chapman Catt and the National American Woman Suffrage Association. Historical figures portrayed also include Ida B. Wells, Mary Church Terrell and Inez Milholland. Taub became the first woman to independently win Tony Awards for both Best Book and Best Score in the same season.

Chelsea Anderson directs the Phoenix production, with Alan J. Plado serving as music director and Lauran Stanis as choreographer. The cast is led by Cassie Chilton as Alice Paul, Julie Cardia as Carrie Chapman Catt, Chanel Bragg as Mary Church Terrell, Fatima El-Bashir as Ida B. Wells and Annalese Fusaro as Inez Milholland.
