More than 185 Alpha Chi Omega sorority sisters from Arizona State University are to volunteer Aug. 13 at A New Leaf’s La Mesita Family Shelter in Mesa for their annual Day of Action.
The day is to feature educational programming on domestic violence, an engaging impact project and a check presentation for a donation, according to a release.
For over a decade, Alpha Chi Omega has been a steadfast supporter of A New Leaf, contributing tens of thousands of volunteer hours and donating over $150,000 to help survivors of domestic violence, the release states.
Domestic violence remains a critical issue in the U.S. According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, nearly one in four women and one in 10 men will experience some form of domestic violence. This issue not only affects individuals but also has a profound impact on families and communities. Efforts to raise awareness and support for survivors are essential in addressing and preventing domestic violence, the release states.
“We’re honored to continue our partnership with Alpha Chi Omega in 2025 as these incredible women lead by example, showing up with heart, purpose, and generosity,” Dana Martinez, director of domestic violence services, said in the release. “Their commitment empowers the families we serve at La Mesita, and it’s inspiring to see the next generation so deeply engaged in creating lasting change.”
“Alpha Chi Omega is so proud to support A New Leaf and their incredible mission of providing stability and safety to families in our community. Each week, 20-plus Alpha Chi members volunteer at La Mesita’s afterschool program, and our chapter regularly hosts donation drives for non-perishable food, toiletries, and other essentials,” Allison Scharf, president of Alpha Chi Omega at ASU, said in the release. “These experiences have helped our members develop a deep love for service and a strong commitment to raising awareness about domestic violence, an issue that is close to all of our members’ hearts and reflect the core of our national philanthropy.”
The public is invited to join this special event 9:30 a.m.-noon Wednesday, Aug. 13, at A New Leaf’s La Mesita Campus, 2254 W Main St. in Mesa, to recognize and celebrate Alpha Chi Omega’s outstanding contributions.
