Under Arizona law, pedestrians don’t always have a place on our roads

Posted

This response is to correct misinformation in the letter, Walkers have a place on Valley roads that was published Dec. 18, 2024.

Pedestrians may not walk on a roadway if there are sidewalks provided, per Arizona Revised Statutes.

ARS 28-796. Pedestrian on roadways

1. If sidewalks are provided, a pedestrian shall not walk along and on an adjacent roadway.

2. If sidewalks are not provided, a pedestrian walking along and on a highway shall walk when practicable only on the left side of the roadway or its shoulder facing traffic that may approach from the opposite direction.

3. A person shall not stand in a roadway for the purpose of soliciting a ride from the driver of a vehicle.

You are now informed, so please walk on the sidewalks provided.
