Mesa school district approves $250K subgrant award for increasing ELA, math proficiency

Posted

The Mesa Public Schools Governing Board approved a $250,000 subgrant award that the district will use for instructional models for ELA and math courses at their July 22 meeting.

The vote passed 5-0 as an action item. The grant will help fund the implementation of instructional models that will be used by three elementary schools per year starting in the 2025-26 school year. These models will integrate team-based staffed, aligned professional learning and teacher leadership.

“Each school will focus on a single subject — ELA, foundational literacy or math — with a clear throughline to their school theory of action and professional learning plan,” board documents stated. “Participating schools will receive on-site and virtual support, instructional walkthroughs, and coaching to strengthen instructional delivery and collaborative planning.”

According to board documents, MPS will expand this program in 2027 and begin to implement it district-wide. The district will receive a total of $250,000 over three years from the grant, which not only supports implementation but also substitute coverage, off-contract pay and stipends for teachers participating in the teaming models.

“The grant goals and support are directly aligned with the district’s instructional framework and is designed to promote gains in student learning outcomes and teacher effectiveness,” board documents said.

Mesa Unified School District — also known as Mesa Public Schools — is the largest public school district in Arizona and has six high schools, nine junior high schools, 55 elementary schools and 18 choice and success schools.
