Gilbert fourth graders attend Water Festival focused on water conservation

Posted

Gilbert Public Schools fourth graders participated in the district’s 15th annual Water Festival, an event designed to teach students about water conservation and the importance of water in the desert.

The two-day festival brought together students, the Arizona Project WET program and the Town of Gilbert for a series of hands-on activities intended to encourage students to think like scientists while learning about water resources.

The festival functions as an educational field trip for fourth-grade classes, introducing students and teachers to lessons on water conservation, regional water resources and potential careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Project WET organized interactive learning stations during the event. Activities included a water conservation relay race, groundwater extraction simulations, watershed modeling and a bracelet-making exercise designed to demonstrate the water cycle.

Students are expected to continue the lessons after returning to their classrooms, where they will study water conservation and the water cycle and assess their own water use.

The annual event is supported by the Town of Gilbert and volunteers from the town and Gilbert Public Schools high schools.
