A 180-unit apartment complex is to be constructed east of Mesa Drive and north of University Drive at the site of the former Mesa General Hospital, which closed in May 2008.

The Mesa Planning and Zoning Board on June 28 voted 5-0 on a consent agenda with other items to recommend that the city council approve rezoning six acres to multiple residence-4 with a planned area development overlay and a site plan review for the Mesa Drive Apartments. Absent were Vice Chair Benjamin Ayers and board member Genessee Montes.

The primary access to the apartment complex of studio, one- and two-bedroom units will be from North Mesa Drive, Planner Samantha Brannagan said at a study session prior to the meeting.

“For reference this is the location of the Mesa General Hospital back in the day. This lot previously had a parking structure on it but has since been (demolished),” she said. “They are proposing four apartment buildings of which all of them will be three stories high.”

Synetic Design is the applicant. AZ MED CAP LLC is the owner.

Amenities will include a clubhouse/leasing office with a fitness center and lounge, a pool, dog park and center greenspace courtyard with landscaping, hammocks and picnic tables, according to a written project narrative.

“The development is on the site of the former Mesa General Hospital, which closed in May 2008, and surrounded by medical and multifamily housing,” it states. “The development is planned to accommodate 260 (parking) spaces and an additional 37 spaces will be shared with the hospital to the north of the site per the shared parking agreement.”

The seven-member Mesa Planning and Zoning Board conducts hearings and makes recommendations to council on requests for changes in zoning and on required site plans. It also considers and recommends changes in the city’s long-range plans and in the municipal code concerning planning and zoning matters. Members are appointed for staggered terms of three years, according to the city’s website.
