Apache Junction water district to buy land near well

Posted

A sale agreement and purchase of land for $123,500 adjacent to Well No. 8 at 2102 S. Coconino Drive in Superstition Villa was discussed at a recent Apache Junction Water Utilities Community Facilities District board meeting.

“The developer reached out to us. His property was a small parcel; it’s ... between our well site and adjacent apartment complex. He was looking to sell it because he could not develop it in the way he wanted to. He reached out to us to see if we were interested in purchasing this property,” Water District Director Mike Loggins said during the board’s Feb. 20 meeting.

The agreement is between the district and Gold Canyon resident and property owner David Wirth. It includes a $123,500 purchase price in cash with no financing or entitlement contingencies, according to a written purchase and sales agreement.

Apache Junction City Council members serve as the water utilities community facilities district board. No decision was made by the board. Members Robert Schroeder and Peter Heck were absent.

The Apache Junction Water District supplies groundwater pumped from the Eastern Salt River Sub-Basin Aquifer, which flows southwesterly under Apache Junction and its surrounding areas. The groundwater is treated for arsenic removal where necessary, disinfected with chlorine, pumped into storage tanks and blended with surface water from the Colorado River.

The surface water is transported through the Central Arizona Project canal system and filtered and purified at the Superstition Area Water Plant before being introduced into the distribution system.

The water district can also receive treated CAP water from the city of Mesa through an interconnect for a backup supply of water, if needed.

The water district, formed by the city of Apache Junction on Aug. 2, 1994, is responsible for providing water service for a portion of the city of Apache Junction, according to www.ajwaterdistrict.org. The remaining area is served by Arizona Water Co., www.azwater.com.
