The week of Jan. 15, Chandler Unified School District’s newest Governing Board members were sworn in, including Claudia Mendoza, shown here with her family and, on the right, Superintendent Frank Narducci. The board approved more than $500,000 in fire alarm system purchases for three CUSD facilities.
One of the three action items on Wednesday night’s Chandler Unified School District Governing Board regular meeting agenda is considered a safety item.
It’s more than a half-million-dollar safety item.
The board approved a contract with Copper State Fire Protection for $538,000 to install new fire alarm systems at Conley and Sanborn elementary schools and at the district’s support services building.
The money for the fire-alarm purchase will come from 2019 bond funds.
Newly sworn-in board member Ryan Heap asked CUSD Director of Support Services Tom Dunn if there was a master list of aging equipment such as the three systems in the contract. Dunn said not only is there a list, but also a schedule of what gets replaced and when.
A staff report states Conley, which opened in 1994, Sanborn (1996) and the support services building (1988) all have their original fire alarm systems, which are obsolete and are “very difficult to service and maintain.”
