The Gilbert Public Schools Governing Board unanimously voted Nov. 29 to approve new course description books for the 2023-24 school year.
The books cover the district’s high schools, junior highs and Gilbert Classical Academy. Board Member Charles Santa Cruz summarized the changes as minor edits and changes for organizational improvement.
Krista Cox, the district’s director of secondary curriculum, instruction and assessment, presented the changes to the board.
Those changes included new course offerings, including internships attached to all career and technical education courses; reclassification of some courses for dual-enrollment credit; some rewritten course descriptions for clarity and alignment with state standards; some course name changes; the dropping of courses no longer being used; and a reformatting of the novels page, including some grade-level changes for some novels to align them with standards.
Two novels were added to the approved novels list in the high school book: Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice” and Alexandre Dumas’ “Count of Monte Cristo.”
Additionally, Cox said there were no new course-specific fees.
