The Peoria Unified School District recently banned three books from being taught in the classroom, and at the next public governing board meeting Aug. 13 staff will discuss how they determined their prohibition.
District officials have instructed teachers to remove the following works from grade 6-8 curriculum: “Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, An American Slave,” by Frederick Douglass, “A Raisin in the Sun,” a play by Lorraine Hansberry, and “Summer of the Mariposas,” a novel for young audiences by Guadalupe Garcia McCall.
The move is part of new English language arts curriculum that must align with new district policies, including a “No DEI” policy approved by the governing board last year.
