Peoria farmers market makes move to Glendale

Longtime family event has new home at Arrowhead

After more than a dozen years in Peoria, the homegrown Momma’s Organic Market is moving just down the road to Glendale.

The longtime farmers market will make its debut 8-11 a.m. Saturday, July 11 after a bit of scramble to find its new home, which will be next to AMC Theater at Arrowhead Towne Center, 7700 W. Arrowhead Towne Center, Glendale.

“I’m glad that Arrowhead Mall was willing to take us on,” market owner Christa Esquibel said July 9.

Ms. Esquibel has some history with the market, to say the least.

Her family began the market in the front yard of her mom, Cindy Bauer, in Peoria. The modest beginning quickly blossomed.

“She lived on an acre when we tried having a little get together,” Ms. Esquibel remembered. “We didn’t think it was gonna be all that big. We had like 12 vendors, and 500 people showed up. And we said, ‘OK, we’ve got to find a place to have this.’”

Just short of 13 years later, the market -- now 75 vendors strong -- makes the move to Arrowhead Mall from the only home it had known previously, in Peoria at Park West, 9744 W. Northern Ave.

Although Momma’s Organic “would have liked to stay in Peoria,” said Ms. Esquibel, Park West didn’t renew the market's lease. The family looked at other sites around Peoria, from city parks to the Peoria Sports Complex, but since the market is considered an event, restrictions against gatherings of more than 10 people during coronavirus ruled those options out.

All vendors will feature safe social distancing when the market makes its debut at its new site Saturday, July 11. Vendors include food items mainly, along with other handmade items.

“It’s mostly all groceries and local food: produce, meat, milk and all that good stuff,” she said.

The 8-11 a.m. Saturday summer hours will continue weekly through August, at which time the market hours shift to 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturdays from September through May.

“I’ve lived in Peoria pretty much my whole life,” Ms. Esquibel said. “So my goal is to keep on the west side of town, because that’s just where my heart is.”
