Glendale bank branch gives to business academy

The Arizona Council on Economic Education is supporting programs across the state that are dedicated to entrepreneurship, economic and financial literacy, and workforce development in Arizona.

ACEE partners with organization like the Collier Business Academy to ensure that financial literacy is not just a subject, but a way of thinking, preparing students for real-world financial success.

The school – which is the only of its kind in Arizona - weaves economic education into the fabric of their students’ daily lives.

In 2023, ACEE partnered with Collier Business Academy to deepen financial literacy education with its students. With the financial support of WaFd Bank, this partnership is flourishing, providing year-round professional development for teachers to seamlessly integrate financial and economic education.

“I am so excited about all that we have accomplished this year and for the future work ahead,” stated Adrienne, a Collier business coach, in a press release. “We appreciate ACEE more than they know and value their expertise in education. We shine because they shine and share!”

WaFd Bank’s Foundation gave ACEE a grant for $25,000 as part of National Financial Literacy Month, which takes place every April.

At the heart of this impact is the commitment of Miko Baedeker, personal banker from the WaFd Glendale branch, Rita Kemp, Glendale branch manager and the entire Glendale office.

“Research shows that having knowledge about financial issues helps people make better decisions with their money,” Kemp stated in a press release. “This can lead to lower debt and more savings in the bank. This includes knowing how credit works, how to create and use a budget, and how to save for the future, among other skills.”

WaFd Bank has given more than just money, though, they also have been dedicated volunteers, helping launch the following initiatives:

  • Financial Literacy Family Nights – Facilitating conversations between students and families about financial decision-making, including financial fitness activities, STEM/STEAM nights connecting science with finance, and innovative teacher-led conferences.
  • The Largest Financial Literacy Family Night in ACEE History – A popular event with over 400 students and family participants, engaging the community in financial empowerment.
  • Arizona’s First Financial Literacy Conference for Educators – Bringing together more than 100 teachers across the state, collectively impacting more than 15,000 students with financial education tools.

“These milestones would not have been possible without WaFd’s investment in financial literacy and the tireless efforts of its volunteers,” stated Monica Martinez, ACEE Director of Operations and Community Relations. “Their commitment is shaping the future of financial education, ensuring that both students and educators are equipped with the knowledge and skills to thrive.”

The Glendale branch, at  6895 W. Bell Road, has volunteered many hours, helping assemble teacher resource materials, presenting budgeting basics and conducting mock interviews for career development.
