There will be free fishing at both of Glendale’s urban fishing lakes this Saturday.

Arizona Game & Fish announced Wednesday that anglers can fish Arizona waters for free on Saturday, June 4.

Bonsall Pond, located within Bonsall Park at 5840 W. Bethany Home Road, and Heroes Regional Park, 8300 W. Bethany Road, are both fishing spots in the city.

Anglers can also fish within the 131-mile Arizona Canal system, parts of which flow through Glendale and feature carp and white amur, according to Salt River Project. Per Arizona fishing regulations, all white amur in the canals must be immediately released back into the water unharmed. The weed-eating fish are part of an SRP program to help keep the canals clean and clear without using chemicals or machinery.

Fishing on Saturday is free, but for other days Arizona fishing licenses start at $37 for residents 18 and older. A combination hunt and fish license for youths (10-17) are $5.

Arizona’s Free Fishing Day is celebrated as part of National Fishing and Boating Week. As an incentive, a fishing license is not required Saturday for residents fishing any public waters statewide.

“Whether you’re a seasoned angler who wants to introduce a newcomer to the sport, or someone who’s always been interested but never took that next step, this is the perfect time to get outdoors and experience what fishing in Arizona is all about,” Julie Carter, Game and Fish aquatic wildlife branch chief, shared in a news release.

While a fishing license isn’t needed Saturday, bag limits and other fishing regulations still apply and must be observed on Free Fishing Day. Kids under 10 can fish for free all year long in Arizona, so this special fishing license exemption means that older kids and parents get a free pass for the day.

The purchase of a fishing license directly contributes to state conservation programs, including fisheries management, habitat protection and fishing education.
