City of Glendale celebrates Arbor Day

Copper Creek students learn about sustainability

About 80 children had a chance to plant trees in a park and uncover the importance of water conservation at an educational city of Glendale Arbor Day event.

Glendale’s Parks and Recreation Department, with support from the city’s transportation and water departments, Mayor Jerry P. Weiers and Councilmember Lauren Tolmachoff of the Cholla District engaged Copper Creek Elementary School third-graders in this celebration of sustainability on April 24 at Hillcrest Park near 71st Avenue and Hillcrest Boulevard.

West Coast Arborists, Inc. employees delivered a presentation on the life cycles of trees while transportation employees showed the children chainsaws and other power tools that they use to trim trees and shrubs. Water services employees talked to the students about water cycles, including the best ways to water trees.
