Mesquite High alum from Gilbert earns three college TV award nominations

Posted

Mesquite High School alumnus Remington Butler has received three nominations for the Television Academy Foundation College Television Awards.

The College Television Awards recognize and reward excellence in student-produced programs from colleges and universities nationwide. Designed to emulate the Emmy Awards, student entries are judged by Television Academy members.

Originally from Gilbert, Butler is a 2023 graduate of Brigham Young University where he majored in advertising and minored in film. He attended Mesquite High School in Gilbert.

BYU swept all three nominations in the “Commercial, PSA or Promo” category for the 43rd College Television Awards.

Butler received nominations for each of the three nominated spots he worked on while attending BYU: as director and writer for “Alzheimer's Association — No One Is Alone,” as writer and director for “IMAX — Maximum Immersion” and as director for “Lyft — We Don't Judge, We Drive.”

“My grandma suffered from dementia near the end of her life, so it is a topic that is close to my heart,” Butler said. “The ‘Alzheimer's Association — No One Is Alone’ story is loosely based on her. I wanted to make something impactful and emotional that people will remember to help bring awareness to the disease.

“I learned that there is more than one way to tell a story. For example, combining super 8 and digital footage for this commercial was not very conventional but was the right way to tell this story and the right way to convey the tone that I wanted.”

Butler said it means a lot to him to be nominated.

“The fact that three of my projects were nominated gives me encouragement that I have talent as a director and that this is something that I can do well and something I want to pursue," he said.

Twenty-one student-produced programs were nominated from 181 entries submitted by 37 colleges and universities nationwide for the 43rd College Television Awards. Criteria for the College Television Awards reflect industry standards of excellence, imagination and innovation.

Winners of the 43rd College Television Awards will be announced by celebrity presenters at a ceremony on April 13, at the Television Academy’s North Hollywood Campus in California.
