While new Environmental Protection Agency rules on “forever chemicals” in drinking water have caused consternation for many municipalities, Gilbert already is set to meet the standards, officials said.
Gilbert’s North Water Treatment Plant, currently undergoing a $692 million expansion and reconstruction, has been designed with granular activated carbon, or GAC, which is effective at removing these chemicals, Water Manager Rebecca Hamel said.
Furthermore, testing at the town’s wells has found only one with levels above the new regulatory limits that are set to take effect in three years. That well has been taken offline while the town investigates the best way to address it, Hamel said.
