Gilbert program reduces falls among older adults

Posted

Gilbert Fire & Rescue Department is highlighting the success of its fall prevention program after reporting a reduction in falls at participating assisted living facilities.

The initiative, known as "Take Your Time, You've Earned It," focuses on educating older adults and caregivers about fall prevention and safety practices.

Firefighters and staff members visit assisted living facilities to provide training designed to reduce fall-related injuries and emergency calls.

According to the department, participating facilities experienced a 25.2% decrease in falls after receiving training. Gilbert Fire & Rescue compared fall data for 180 days before and after visits to measure the program's impact.

Falls remain one of the leading reasons for emergency calls involving older adults. The department said the program helps reduce injuries, hospital transports and 911 calls while allowing emergency crews to remain available for other incidents.

As part of National Fall Prevention Awareness Month, the department is encouraging older adults and caregivers to take preventive measures such as removing trip hazards, maintaining adequate lighting, using mobility aids when needed, reviewing medications for side effects and scheduling regular eye exams.
