Trick-or-treating safety
Stay in well-lit neighborhoods and use sidewalks whenever possible.
Equip children with flashlights, glow sticks or reflective gear to increase visibility.
Make sure costumes fit properly and do not obstruct vision to reduce the risk of trips and falls.
Inspect all candy before consumption. Discard any items that are unwrapped, damaged or appear suspicious.
Safety for drivers
Use extra caution in residential areas during trick-or-treating hours.
Watch for children crossing streets or walking near roadways.
Back out of driveways slowly and carefully.
Never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Pumpkin carving safety
Gilbert Fire & Rescue recommends the following precautions to avoid injuries while carving pumpkins:
Set up carving stations on clean, dry and stable surfaces.
Use tools specifically designed for pumpkin carving and keep them dry.
Work in well-lit areas and use slow, controlled motions.
Keep hands and tools clean and dry, and keep your free hand away from the blade’s path.
In case of injury:
Rinse the wound with warm water and apply pressure using a clean cloth.
Seek medical attention if bleeding persists for more than 15 minutes, the cut is deep or may require stitches.
Call 911 for serious injuries.
Fall safety enforcement
Gilbert police will continue seasonal enforcement efforts focused on:
Underage drinking;
Curfew violations;
Unruly gatherings and parties.
Officials emphasize that community members share responsibility in promoting safety and encouraging youth to make responsible choices.
Definition of an unruly gathering
An “unruly gathering” is defined as any public or private event that disrupts the peace or enjoyment of others. Under Gilbert’s ordinance, responsible parties may include:
Property owners, landlords, tenants or event sponsors;
Parents or guardians of minors involved;
Individuals present or aware of the gathering, especially if similar incidents occurred within the past 180 days.
To report unsafe gatherings or disturbances, call Gilbert police at 480-503-6500 or dial 911 in an emergency.
