A Tempe man has been indicted after being accused of buying stolen items from thieves and shoplifters, advertising them on eBay and selling products to unsuspecting buyers, according to the Arizona Attorney General’s Office
Troy Wagner faces charges of fraudulent schemes, trafficking in stolen property and failure to pay state taxes.
The Gilbert Police Department arrested Wagner on the grand jury warrant.
The charges are based on an investigation conducted by detectives with the Gilbert Police Department, the Arizona Attorney General’s Office and investigators from Target, Home Depot, CVS, Walgreens, Safeway and Kroger, state officials said.
Wagner made about $300,000 in profit over four years, Attorney General Kris Mayes announced last week.
A search warrant of Wagner’s apartment found an additional $275,000 in retail products waiting to be sold, according to a release.
"Organized retail theft and fraud have an impact on every Arizonan. From the store owners and businesses suffering losses, to regular customers facing increased prices resulting from theft," Mayes said.
"In addition, the emergence of online marketplaces trafficking in stolen products creates a dangerous situation for unsuspecting buyers who can no longer trust the integrity of the products they purchase."
Assistant Attorney General Brian Guerrero is prosecuting this case, officials said.
