Gilbert man sentenced to life for killing stepfather

A man who admitted killing his 91-year-old stepfather with a hammer and attacking his 81-year-old mother in their Gilbert home will spend the rest of his life in prison.

Gary Crawford, 58, was sentenced to natural life in prison plus 21 years after pleading guilty to first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder, according to the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office.

Gilbert police were called Nov. 22, 2025, to a home near McQueen and Elliot roads for a welfare check after a caller reported that her 91-year-old father was not answering his door when the two were supposed to have dinner.
