Gilbert man turns ALS diagnosis into mission through gaming

For most of his life, video games have been a way for Jorge de Cardenas to unwind.

Now they have become something more: a platform for a 29-year-old Gilbert resident facing a devastating diagnosis to introduce others to ALS and raise money for people living with the disease.

De Cardenas started the Twitch channel GAMINGwithALS after being diagnosed this year with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a progressive neurological disease that attacks nerve cells controlling voluntary muscle movement.
