The Gilbert Office of Economic Development is launching a "Digging the District" campaign to support upcoming construction scheduled in the Heritage District in the months ahead.
The campaign features a new website, DiggingtheDistrict.com, that will highlight all announced Heritage District projects and their varying phases of development to serve as a resource to inform residents and visitors on downtown Gilbert's developments.
The first project will implement phase one for Gilbert’s wayfinding and place marketing project, which will feature the installation of new directional signage in February.
“The new year brings some much-anticipated changes taking shape in the Heritage District, helping establish a stronger sense of place for Gilbert’s downtown,” Economic Development Director Dan Henderson said in a release . “As the district continues to evolve and serve up a collection of distinct experiences and offerings for daytime and evening audiences, ensuring smooth pedestrian and vehicle traffic flow remains a top priority. The directional signage aims to benefit the Heritage District visitor.”
Gilbert’s Heritage District is also introducing a new identity with the signage installation to help tell the district’s story.
The redevelopment team enlisted Phoenix agency Multistudio for the project, which began work in March 2023.
With town leaders, townwide department leads, and members of the public and Heritage District businesses acting as a steering committee, they identified three character-defining areas in the district: Railway, Canal, and Water Tower.
Storytelling signs identifying these core regions of the downtown will be installed, highlighting significant historical dates and offering a short narrative as visitors embark upon each area.
As additional planned private construction projects begin and CIP projects, including the Vaughn Ventilator low-speed roadway extension, prepare for groundbreaking in 2025, the town acknowledges the potential significant impact on businesses, according to the release.
The Digging the District website will share real-time updates on each development, road closures and traffic impacts, and guide visitors to parking, event and business access, and other amenities.
Online visitors can view the latest project renderings for each development and engage with the interactive mapping tools featuring GPS location.
