Two Gilbert landmarks will be illuminated in teal on Nov. 3 as part of a global campaign to raise awareness for Alzheimer’s disease.
The Gilbert Water Tower and Sunrise of Gilbert assisted living facility are among more than two dozen Phoenix-area sites participating in the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America’s “Light the World in Teal” initiative.
The campaign, held annually during Alzheimer’s Awareness Month, encourages landmarks and individuals to display the color teal — AFA’s official awareness color — to show support for those affected by the disease.

More than 1,500 landmarks in all 50 states and 13 countries are expected to take part in this year’s campaign, now in its 12th year.
“We are grateful to have some of the Phoenix area’s most high-profile sites raising awareness and supporting the millions of people affected by Alzheimer’s disease,” Charles J. Fuschillo Jr., president and CEO of the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America, said in a release. “Every landmark that lights up teal on November 3 brightens the spotlight on Alzheimer’s awareness across the world.”
Residents are also encouraged to participate by wearing teal or sharing messages on social media.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly 7 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease, including about 151,000 in Arizona. That number is projected to double by 2060.
