Visitors to Downtown Gilbert’s Heritage District will observe enhancements as phase one of the wayfinding and placemarketing initiative approaches completion.
Permanent signage has been installed to assist with navigation to public parking, restrooms, rideshare zones, bicycle racks, and other key amenities.
In total, 74 signs have been placed during this initial phase of the project.
The most notable additions are the new Heritage District directory signs, which stand 7 feet tall and feature the latest technology in programmable LED illumination.
Two directory signs are being installed, one at the northeast corner of BriComp Boulevard and Vaughn Avenue and the other at the northeast corner of Ash Street and Vaughn Avenue.
The directory signs are crafted from a solid aluminum structure that has been powder-coated with an embedding process and that allows for precise copy and graphics to be executed within material that can withstand long-term direct sun exposure and seasonal temperature differentials common in Arizona.
The aluminum signs were all carved using water and laser jet cutting processes and designed to be interchangeable and easily updated in real time to account for new developments.
The overall design of the Heritage District signage incorporated several elements into the storytelling of downtown Gilbert’s key landmark areas: the Canal, Water Tower, and Railway.
Water droplets, railroad tracks, bicycle tread marks, waves, and a hidden water tower all signify an iconic moment pulled from Gilbert’s history, which dates back to its establishment in 1902.
The Gilbert Office of Economic Development developed the "Digging the District" public awareness campaign that highlights the wayfinding efforts and features all Heritage District projects that have recently been completed or are underway.
The website, DiggingtheDistrict.com, is designed to serve as an informative resource for residents and visitors on the new developments taking place in downtown Gilbert.
Residents can also find updates on access, road closures, construction and traffic impacts.
Online visitors can view the latest project renderings for each development and engage with the interactive mapping tools featuring GPS location.
