Gilbert officials say the town has recorded its fourth garbage truck fire of the year, underscoring the risk posed by hazardous materials in household trash.
Town officials warn that items such as batteries, leftover chemicals and other flammable materials can ignite when compacted inside sanitation trucks, endangering drivers and equipment.
Residents are urged to keep the following items out of trash bins:
Batteries of any type;
Pool chemicals;
Household cleaners;
Paint;
Automotive fluids;
Propane tanks;
Other hazardous materials.
These items should be taken to Gilbert’s Household Hazardous Waste Facility, where staff are trained to handle materials that could cause fires, explosions or contamination. A full list of accepted items, along with the facility’s address and hours, is available at gilbertaz.gov/HHW.
Officials also remind residents to take precautions when disposing of ashes during cooler months.
Hot ashes can remain combustible for hours or days. Before placing ashes in a trash bin, allow them to cool for at least 24 hours, seal them in a bag and never dispose of hot ashes, coals or embers directly in the bin.
Gilbert will host a household hazardous waste and recycling event from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 28, at the Gilbert Public Works facility, 900 E. Juniper Ave.
The drive-through event will offer drop-off options for hazardous waste, document shredding and other materials. Additional details will be announced closer to the date.
Town officials say proper disposal helps prevent garbage truck fires and protects sanitation crews and the community.
