East Valley puts land recognition on agenda

Despite a discussion at its last meeting leading the Chandler Unified Governing Board to bump an item to action at its Wednesday, Sept. 9, the CUSD board is likely in for another long discussion about when and how often to read a land acknowledgment.

There are only four separate action items on the agenda for the 6:30 p.m. regular meeting, set to be held at Chandler’s district offices, 1525 W. Frye Road.

But possible action on whether to read a land acknowledgement of Indigenous peoples at each board meeting and in district graduation ceremonies could lead to a long discussion, as it did at the board’s Aug. 19 meeting. That’s when the reading of the acknowledgement was presented as an information-only announcement.
