Flags throughout The Grand community in Surprise and nationwide are lowered to half-staff all day today, Sept. 11, for the 23-year-anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
About 50 people gathered for a ceremony of remembrance hosted by The Grand Flag Detail team at the Veterans Monument in the Village Center, where they paid respects to the lives lost the morning of Sept. 11, 2001, during the attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon, as well as those killed on United Airlines Flight 93, which crashed in suburban Pennsylvania.
Flags are ordered to be lowered to half-staff for the entire day on Sept. 11 to remember the 2,977 victims killed in the 2001 terrorist attacks. Ceremonies were held simultaneously across the country to coincide with when the attacks occurred.
