State of the Bill of Rights event held in Apache Junction

Posted

Pinal District 5 Republican Committee and Superstition Mountain Republican Club in Apache Junction co-hosted the “America’s Bill of Rights – Then & Now” event at Tumbleweed Grill in Apache Junction on Saturday, March 11.

The event was designed to be both educational and entertaining and bring community together to remember and celebrate our Bill of Rights.

Jeff Serdy, Pinal County supervisor, welcomed event guests and congratulated the event hosts for their collaboration in creating the event. Sheriff Mark Lamb set the tone for the event with words about patriotism. Local youth performed the National Anthem and patriotic songs.

In a solemn moment, D5 Chairman Vicky McLaughlin presented a donation to the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office for its Juvenile Redirection Program in memory of Sheriff Lamb’s son and his son’s family lost in a tragic crash.

The program started when co-hosts Vicky McLaughlin and SMRC President Alan Miller provided a bit of Bill of Rights history: how it shaped us, especially Arizona, during the westward expansion (circa 1800s).

Alan Korwin, author of the gun law books and a Bill of Rights scholar, guided the line-up of local dignitaries in a reading of the original 10 Bill of Rights amendments. Each dignitary read an amendment assigned to them and presented their special interest and knowledge about the amendment.

To bring to life the connection between Bill of Rights then and now, Alan Korwin with the Superstition Mountain Regulators western re-enactors acted out scenarios regarding the amendments, how they were perceived and understood in the early days of territorial Arizona vs. now.

There was a 50/50 donation and drawing for various donated prizes of books, hats, memorabilia and a hand-made wooden American flag by Ted Gremmel, SMRC vice-president. The proceeds of the event are to be used for local youth education programs.

The hosts thank the participants and guests for their support, and a special thank you to Pinal District 5 Republican Committee members who were part of the program: Brenda Gifford, invocation; Jerry Walker, pledge; Kim Grady (with Alan Korwin’s mentorship), producer; and Christopher (Neil) Gunter, event sound master. The event’s success has sealed its future, watch for a repeat: pinal5gop.com.
