Deer Valley Unified opens new year with eye on boundary changes

Some campuses will be over capacity, some below 50%. But the area up north figures to change the face of the district for many years to come.

Changing campus boundaries within a school district is never an easy process, and hardly a popular one.

Deer Valley Unified School District — one of the biggest in Arizona with 42 schools and 31,000-plus students — is no stranger to the concept or to its divisive nature among residents. Four years ago the district faced the issue with regards to campuses on the north end of Peoria and Phoenix near Happy Valley Road that were each facing student overcrowding issues.

“It’s a hard thing to make boundary changes,” then-governing board member Ann Ordway said. “One neighborhood is going to be unhappy, another neighborhood is going to be happy. It’s just not an easy thing to do boundaries.”
