Tempe poverty rate rises, nonprofits struggle to keep up

Compared with some Valley cities, Tempe is a small city with less than 200,000 residents living in about 40 square miles.

But the city has a big problem.

The U.S. Census Bureau estimates that more than 16% of Tempe’s population lives in poverty, and local nonprofits cite rent costs, targeted pricing, and luxury developments as one of the biggest reasons for growing poverty rates.
