On July, 29, former Tempe mayor and congressman Harry Mitchell died at the age of 86. At the Aug. 31 council meeting, the Tempe City Council read a proclamation in his honor.
Mitchell lived in Arizona for almost his entire life as he was born in Phoenix and his family moved to Tempe when he was a child. He attended Arizona State University where he studied politics and would go on to spend 16 years as the mayor of Tempe and 24 years total on the Tempe City Council.
“Throughout his life, the Honorable Harry E. Mitchell continued to teach all of us how to be a good friend and community member,” Mayor Corey Woods said in his proclamation at the council meeting.
