A report by journalist Howard Fisher that the president of the Arizona Senate wants to rename a portion of the Loop 202 freeway for assassinated Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk drew opposition from some fellow state lawmakers. “Charlie Kirk is a son of Arizona who embodied the very fabric of our founding fathers when they crafted the Bill of Rights,” state Sen. Warren Petersen of Gilbert told Fisher, a phrase the Gilbert Republican and GOP candidate for Arizona attorney general said means the 31-year-old Kirk made Arizona his home even though he grew up and spent more than half his life in Illinois.
“I’m appalled that Charlie Kirk was assassinated, but to name Loop 202 for Charlie Kirk? Maybe John McCain, but Charlie Kirk?” — Arwin Roe via email
“How about we just stop naming roads after people?” — Ja Koe via Facebook
“I disagree wholeheartedly with the scheme to name the Loop 202 after Charlie Kirk. We shouldn't be naming roads after people much less after Kirk. If it’s named after him, I will never drive on it again.” — Julianne M. Bergstrom via email
