See which name won the vote for Phoenix’s new library branch

Posted

The public vote is in for the new Phoenix Public Library branch at the Estrella Civic Space.

Manzanita was the winner of a public poll to name the library, Phoenix Public Library spokesperson Lee Franklin told Independent Newsmedia on Wednesday.

The name will be presented to the Phoenix Library Advisory Board at its next meeting. It will still need to be approved by the Phoenix Heritage Commission and is planned to go to Phoenix City Council for final approval on Wednesday, Nov. 18.

The city aims to start construction on the library in the 2027-28 fiscal year.

Manzanita beat out four other names in the survey: Cliffrose, Creosote, Jojoba and Senita. Phoenix Public Library policy established in the 1960s is to name all library branches after desert flora. The poll was open Monday, Aug. 31 through Friday, Oct. 2.

The Estrella Civic Space is a master planned area under development northeast of 99th Avenue and Lower Buckeye Road. It already has a police station and fire station built. Aside from the library, the master plan includes plans for a park with soccer and softball fields and Public Works Department buildings.

The Phoenix Public Library has another planned library branch at the Desert View Civic Space, southwest of Tatum Boulevard and Deer Valley Drive. That library is planned to start construction in the 2028-29 fiscal year.
