The New River Dam and channel near Paloma Park Preserve play a vital role in protecting the Peoria community during storm events, but they are not recreation areas.
Recently, increased unauthorized foot and vehicle traffic have been happening in restricted areas.
Access to the dam and channel area are off-limits to the public at all times. Entering these areas can be extremely dangerous and may interfere with flood-control operations that protect the broader community, city officials said.
This flood control infrastructure, owned and maintained by the Flood Control District of Maricopa County, helps safely keep stormwater away from homes, parks, and streets. While located near a public park, the dam and channel are active flood-control facilities. Water levels and flow conditions can change quickly and without warning, making these areas unsafe.
The city is asking the public to:
• Stay on designated trails;
• Observe and respect posted signs, fencing, and barriers;
• Avoid entering flood-control infrastructure at all times, even during dry conditions;
• Call Peoria Police or park rangers to report unauthorized activity 623-773-8311.
