New foster care funding is welcome news for greater Phoenix

Former foster parent urges families to open their homes to children

OPINION — Good news for Arizona’s foster care system rarely makes headlines, which is why Gov. Katie Hobbs’s recent announcement of rate increases for foster parents deserves attention and applause.

Even better, she’s not stopping there. Her plan to increase funding for foster families, group homes and young adults aging out of care is an encouraging sign that the state is taking seriously the responsibility to protect and support its most vulnerable children.

The latest proposal includes additional dollars to fully fund group care, expand support for foster families, and extend resources for young adults up to age 21 which includes Success Coaches to help former foster youth navigate housing, education and employment as they transition to independence. These investments are thoughtful, timely and deeply needed.
