The cooperative contract allows for the purchase of one body scanner for the Mesa Police Department.
The Mesa City Council recently approved using a cooperative contract for a body scanner for the police department.
The council voted 7-0 Aug. 18 to approve the use of a BuyBoard cooperative contract with Tek84 to purchase a full body scanner with a thermal reader to enhance efficiency and reduce physical contact during inmate processing for the Mesa Police Department.
The contact is valued at $191,000 and will run from Aug. 18 to May 31, 2026, with a renewal option of up to two years. The contract will be funded by opioid settlement funds.
A full body scanner will offer advanced detection capabilities that would exceed those of a physical search, according to council documents. The scanner will limit physical contact, improve safety and reduce the risk of potential exposure to diseases or pests.
“It can identify concealed narcotics and weapons, including those hidden beneath clothing, inside body cavities or within prosthetic devices,” the council report stated. “By leveraging this technology, the department can significantly increase safety for officers, inmates, facility staff and the public.”
