Kyrene 7th-grader takes second place in regional spelling bee

Isabelle Garcia, who attends Kyrene del Pueblo Middle School, finished second earlier this month in the Maricopa County Region 1 Spelling Bee.

The finish qualifies the seventh-grader for the Arizona State Bee, according to a Kyrene School District release.

Garcia spelled carafe, dilapidated, safari, nanotechnology and indigestion until being knocked from top spot with the word aggrandizement.

Thirty-three spellers from the Kyrene School District, Mesa Public Schools, Tempe Elementary School District and private, charter and home-school organizations competed in the bee after winning their individual qualifying spelling bees, Kyrene officials said.

Garcia and the other top 27 spellers in the state will move on to the Arizona State Spelling Bee on March 16
