Gilbert Public Schools has announced plans to close Pioneer Elementary School at the end of the school year and adjust nearby school boundaries beginning in 2026–27.
In a letter sent Friday to district families, GPS said the proposal is part of its ongoing enrollment management process designed to balance student populations, make efficient use of district facilities, and ensure fiscal responsibility.
“Over time, with changing enrollment across the district, it is necessary to look at some changes in order to ensure we can continue to give all of our students and families a high standard of education while maximizing the use of our school buildings and ensuring the district is being fiscally responsible,” the letter stated.
The proposal calls for Pioneer Elementary to close in May 2026. Portions of its attendance area would be reassigned to Carol Rae Ranch, Val Vista Lakes, and Harris elementary schools.
A small portion of the current Pioneer boundaries would also shift from Greenfield Junior High to Mesquite Junior High.
According to the district, four neighborhood meetings will be held in November to review the proposal and allow community members to provide feedback. Each meeting will focus on specific changes proposed for the nearby school as well as a full overview of the district’s plan.
The meetings are scheduled for 6 p.m. on the following dates and locations:
Monday, Nov. 17, at Pioneer Elementary, 1535 N. Greenfield Road, Gilbert
Wednesday, Nov. 19, at Carol Rae Ranch Elementary, 3777 E. Houston Ave., Gilbert
Thursday, Nov. 20, at Val Vista Lakes Elementary, 1030 N. Blue Grotto Drive, Gilbert
Monday, Nov. 24, at Harris Elementary, 1820 S. Harris Drive, Mesa
Those unable to attend can submit feedback through a form linked on the district’s website.
A GPS governing board meeting on Dec. 9 will review the proposal and community feedback, but no action will be taken. A vote on the proposed changes is scheduled for Jan. 27.
If the board approves the plan, GPS said all Pioneer families — including those on open enrollment — will be able to apply to attend any district school for the 2026–27 year. Families will also be able to visit and tour other GPS schools to help determine the best fit for their students.
Students living within the current Pioneer boundaries would be provided transportation to their new zoned schools.
For junior high students affected by the boundary adjustment, bus service would be available for one year to Greenfield Junior High so that current seventh graders could complete eighth grade there.
Beginning in 2026–27, bus transportation would be provided to Mesquite Junior High for students in the new boundary area.
The district said the proposed changes are part of its effort to ensure educational accessibility, efficient space utilization and financial responsibility.
