Tempe’s photo enforcement effort resulted in 2,200 confirmed violations in the first two weeks of the program, police said.
More than 7,700 cases were under review when police announced the violations count last month, according to the Tempe Police Department's newsletter.
The numbers are a “strong indicator that dangerous driving behaviors remain a concern on our roads,” police stated in the newsletter.
The enforcement effort, which began May 7 with a warning period, targets several intersections throughout the city and also uses mobile units to detect speeders and red-light runners.
Drivers captured speeding or running a red light started receiving citations June 5 with a fine of $250. If a red light is run while speeding, that is a second citation.
Criminal charges could apply for excessive speeds, and a member of the Tempe Police Department will verify each violation before a complaint is issued, authorities said.
