The city of Surprise plans to activate a new traffic signal at the intersection of 163rd Avenue and Asante Boulevard several months ahead of schedule.

The signal is set to go live in the early morning of Wednesday, July 9 after it was expedited to support ongoing road improvements in the area.

The city will bypass the standard 48-hour flashing red phase and activate it immediately because of high traffic volumes on 163rd Avenue.

Staff will monitor the signal’s performance and will adjust the timing, as necessary.

Road improvements, including center median work, continues along the 163rd Avenue corridor.

Drivers can expect a couple of restrictions around the Asante Boulevard intersection through late July.

There will be closures of the northbound and southbound left most lanes through the intersection. Two through lanes will remain open in each direction.

Left turns at the intersection will be preserved but will be allowed on green arrow only for safety due to limited visibility during construction.
