The West Valley Symphony has announced details about its upcoming season in Surprise.
The professional orchestra performs a season of six concerts from November to April each year at The Vista Center for the Arts, 15660 N. Parkview Place.
With last springs’s retirement of beloved Music Director Maestro Cal Stewart Kellogg, the 2024-25 concert season will feature five concerts led by guest conductors and one led by associate conductor Nicholas Ross.
The season gets underway Sunday, Nov. 10 with “Lyrical Transformations,” conducted by Janna Hymes. The program features Enescu’s “Romanian Rhapsody,” Debussy’s melodic “Petite Suite” and Schumann’s “Symphony No. 2.”
Then, on Sunday, Dec. 8, the West Valley Symphony will be joined on stage by the West Valley Youth Orchestra for “Sounds of the Season.”
Ross and the Youth Orchestra’s Claire Gordon will lead the large group in a program of traditional favorites with selections by Prokofiev, Tchaikovsky and Vaughn-Williams.
After the New Year, on Sunday, Jan. 12, guest conductor Kayoko Dan will lead the orchestra on a compelling musical journey. The program, titled “Unity: A Musical Journey.” includes Valerie Coleman’s “Umoja: Anthem of Unity,” a vibrant celebration of togetherness. Christopher Theofanidis’s “Rainbow Body” will transport listeners through ethereal textures.
The concert wraps up with Tchaikovsky’s “Symphony No. 5,” which is a monumental work.
The New Year continues on Sunday, Feb. 16, with guest conductor Daniel Wiley leading the orchestra through tales of love gone awry with Coleridge-Taylor’s “Petite Suite de Concert and Tchaikovsky’s “Romeo and Juliet.”
Shastakovich Symphony No. 5 expresses the political adversity of a composer deemed a “barbarian artist” by the Soviet regime.
On Sunday, March 2, guest conductor Michael Stanley illustrates the influence of folk music with a concert, titled “Folk Music of the Americas.”
Inspired by American folk music, Copland wrote “Appalachian Spring;” Márquez drew from the dance music of Mexico in “Danzon No. 2” and Dvořák took inspiration from spirituals and Native American music for his “New World Symphony.”
On Sunday, April 6, the season wraps up with “Nostalgia: Connecting With Our Past and Future.” Guest conductor Alex Amsel will lead a musical journey to discover what 21st Century Argentinian composer Benzecry’s “Obertura Tanguera” has in common with Brahms’ 19th Century “Symphony No. 1” and Strass’s 20th Century “Der Rosenkavalier.”
Tickets for all shows are available through the West Valley Symphony Box Office at westvalleysymphony.org.
During West Valley Symphony box office hours (10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays) tickets may be purchased at 602-463-8324, or by visiting the box office at The Vista Center for the Arts.
