Actors PLAYground is tackling the serious issue of domestic violence for its next production that starts later this month.
In recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness month in October, the Surprise community theater is staging two separate casts of “To the Moon,” an hour-long docudrama that follows seven women who speak about their experiences with domestic violence.
Playwright Beth Kander conducted more than 200 surveys and 20 in-person interviews with survivors of domestic violence to write the script, using humor and tragedy to tell those women’s stories.

The survivors, who are played by Actors PLAYground actors, tell their stories one at a time as if they’re talking to an off-screen interviewer.
The title “To The Moon” refers to the classic line from the 1950s TV show “The Honeymooners.” In the show, Jackie Gleason (as Ralph Kramden) would show his fist to Audrey Meadows (as his wife, Alice) and yell “To the moon, Alice,” in what today would be considered a domestic violence threat.
Amber Ryan is directing two performances with the main stage cast and another with the youth actors.
The main stage cast will perform at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 26 and Saturday, Oct. 4, with two 2 p.m. matinees scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 27 and Sunday, Oct. 5.
The youth cast will stage two 7 p.m. shows on Sept. 27 and Friday, Oct. 3, as well as a pair of 2 p.m. matinees on Sunday, Sept. 28 and Oct. 4.
Tickets for the main stage performances are $21 for those 10 and older and $12 for kids under 10.
Youth performances are $18 for those 10 and older and $12 for kids under 10.
