Surprise school PTA picked for national honor

Freedom Traditional group is recognized for excellence

The Parent Teacher Association at Freedom Traditional Academy has been recognized with a national award for helping promote student success.

Freedom’s PTA was recognized as a 2024-2026 National PTA School of Excellence last week after the PTA and administration team made a year-long commitment to implement an action plan for school improvement based on one of the National PTA Standards.

The school’s PTA enrolled in the program in June 2024, choosing to focus on communication. According to the PTA Standards, that focus challenged the school to “engage in proactive, timely and two-way communication so that all families can easily understand and contribute to their child’s educational experience.”

“As this was the first year Freedom Traditional Academy utilized ParentSquare, it provided an excellent opportunity to enhance all avenues of communication,” Freedom PTA President Amy Hues said.

At the start of the school year, the PTA conducted listening sessions with teachers, students and parents. It then developed a feedback-based strategy, which was implemented in November.

The PTA conducted surveys both before and after enacting their communication improvement plan in order to track the results. A detailed report of their process and successful outcome was then submitted to the National PTA this June.

It received the news in August that it had been named a National PTA School of Excellence, which Hues said was a joint effort.

“Freedom PTA earning the National School of Excellence designation is a testament to the collaborative efforts between families, administration and the wider community,” Hues said. “It underscores our commitment to fostering strong relationships and building a supportive educational environment.”

The National PTA School of Excellence recognition program was established in 2014.
