Surprise police make arrest in woman’s shooting death

A 51-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the Feb. 9 shooting death of a woman in Surprise, police said.

Michael Lopez Jr. has been booked for second-degree homicide, two counts of misconduct with weapons, disorderly conduct with weapons, discharging a firearm in city limits and two probation violation warrants, according to a Surprise Police Department release.

Just before 11 p.m. Feb. 9, Surprise officers responded to a report of a shooting in a neighborhood near North Dysart Road and West Elm Street. They found Janice Laborin, 41, in a vehicle with a gunshot wound to the head. She was taken to a hospital where she died.

Detectives determined Laborin and Lopez had been in a romantic relationship.

“It appears to be a horrible act of domestic violence and not a random act of violence,” the release stated.
