Surprise Fire-Medical Department officials are crediting its community paramedicine program with reducing 911 calls by about 78%.
Deputy Chief Jesus Rivera, who has taken the lead of the city’s program, told the Surprise City Council on April 15 that 271 people were referred or assisted through the program last year.
Rivera said the program has reduced hospitalizations and dependence on 911 calls, while increasing the well-being of residents in the community. He said paramedics can schedule home visits with vulnerable populations to put them in touch with resources that can help improve their physical, mental and social health
