Book lovers of all ages are invited to track reading minutes to earn fun prizes during the city of Surprise Mayor’s Literacy Challenge.
The Challenge runs from Jan. 1 through Feb. 15.
First- through sixth-graders will have a chance to win a pizza party for their entire grade.
The Surprise-area elementary school class that reads the most minutes will be the winner.
Elementary, middle, and high schools can compete to win the coveted traveling trophy. The school that logs the most reading minutes will be crowned the champion.
Throughout the challenge, readers will be awarded fun prizes at each 100 minutes read. The goal is to read 700 minutes between Jan. 1 and Feb. 15. Prizes include spring training tickets, vendor coupons to local businesses and raffle tickets for prize drawings.
Every 5- to 11-year-old who finishes the 700 minutes read will earn a free book. Teens, 12 through 17, will receive a Surprise Public Library traveling speaker and adults will get their very own Surprise Public Library book bag.
Visit surpriseaz.gov/LiteracyChallenge to register. Participants of all ages can register as an individual or family.
The Mayor’s Literacy Challenge opening programs will feature special storytimes and games on Jan. 4 at all three city libraries: Hollyhock Library (10 a.m. to noon), Surprise Regional Library (noon to 2 p.m.) and Asante Library (2 to 4 p.m.).
The Closing Party is from 10 a.m. to noon Feb. 15 at Hollyhock Library.
