Surprise mayoral candidate wants councilmember censured

Cline denies she's campaigning illegally to gain advantage

Surprise mayoral candidate Kevin Sartor wants the Surprise City Council to censure his opponent, Councilwoman Aly Cline, for what he calls violations of city, state and federal laws due to alleged illegal campaigning.

Sartor’s campaign issued a news release Thursday night, accusing Cline of twice using her regular monthly district meetings with constituents to campaign for the mayor position, which he said is a violation of the city of Surprise Employee Policy Manual and a Arizona statute that bans using public resources to influence an election.

“Illegally campaigning on the taxpayers’ dime, while disparaging the experience and sacrifice of military veterans like myself, is not something we should expect of someone who wants to lead our community,” said Sartor, a former U.S. Army officer, in the news release. “Today, I am calling on the Surprise City Council to censure Aly Cline for using city resources to illegally campaign at official city events. We need to restore integrity to our community and make sure that taxpayer dollars are never misused like this again.”
