Surprise engineering students build model to aid in school safety

Shadow Ridge High School seniors Jay Lacek and Trenten Mueller presented a sophisticated year-long engineering project to professors at the Ira A. Fulton School of Engineering on April 16, following its successful real-world application by local emergency responders.

As part of the EPICS program, the duo developed high-fidelity 3D-printed models of their campus using advanced CAD software to help the Dysart Unified School District safety department, local police, and fire personnel simulate emergency scenarios.

The project was so successful that city officials utilized the models in a professional table-top exercise, and the district now plans to use the designs to improve emergency planning across other campuses.
