Putting students first: My priorities for Dysart schools

OPINION — My name is Lisa Everett, and I am running for the Dysart Unified School District Governing Board. My name will appear on the Nov. 3 ballot, and I want voters to know where I stand on several issues that I believe deserve attention.

One of my priorities is taking a serious look at the amount of time our students spend on school-issued Chromebooks. Technology certainly has a place in education, but it should be a tool — not a replacement for traditional learning.

Research provides good reason to preserve handwriting in the classroom. Studies have found differences in brain activity and connectivity when people write by hand rather than type, and recent research involving children found better letter and word learning following handwriting practice compared with typing. At the same time, research is not unanimous that handwriting produces better results in every learning situation, reinforcing the importance of finding the right balance.
