A California man is facing attempted first-degree murder charges for an alleged assault of a Surprise woman this week at a home in the area of Greenway and Dysart roads.

Garrett Headrick, 26, was booked in the Maricopa County Jail for allegedly assaulting the woman, whom with he shares a child.

The victim was transported to the hospital in stable condition.

Surprise police said they responded to the home on the morning of Oct. 19 after a neighbor saw Headrick grab the woman by the hair and drag her into the home.

“They heard a woman screaming for help from inside, and when officers forced entry into the home they found a man sitting on top of a woman, assaulting her,” said Sgt. Rick Hernandez, a police spokesperson, in a news release.

Authorities were able to stop the assault by shooting multiple less-lethal bag-type rounds at Headrick, who had several knives near him.

The woman was transported to a local hospital, where she is in stable condition. She suffered multiple injuries, including contusions and lacerations.

Headrick is facing a charge of attempted first-degree murder, four counts of aggravated assault, one count each of kidnapping, threatening and unlawful imprisonment and five counts of disorderly conduct. He is being held on a $1.5 million bond.

Authorities said Headrick traveled from California and waited outside the victim’s home to confront her before the alleged assault.
